North Carolina’s Largest Civil War Reenactment One Month Away

FOUR OAKS – Step back in time as history comes to life at the 160th-anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Bentonville; happening March 15-16, 2025. This signature event, titled “A Terrible Storm,” will offer an immersive experience of one of the last major battles of the Civil War. Tickets are on sale now, and advance purchase is recommended.

A battle scene from the last major reenactment at Bentonville, the 150th, held in 2015. The reenactment events are held every 5 years but the 155th was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The battle reenactments on Saturday and Sunday are the only ticketed events of the weekend, but there’s plenty more to explore. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds, and even the smells of history, from soldier encampments and period cooking to live demonstrations and educational talks. Tour the historic Harper House, learn about 19th-century battlefield medicine, browse dozens of “sutlers” (merchants selling Civil War-era goods), or enjoy the sounds of traditional music. Food and refreshments will be available from local food trucks and the Bentonville Volunteer Fire Department.

Fought March 19-21, 1865, the Battle of Bentonville was the largest battle in North Carolina and one of the final major engagements of the Civil War. Over 80,000 troops clashed across 6,000 acres of farmland, making it a pivotal moment in history. The 2025 reenactment will bring together more than 1,200 re-enactors and an estimated 30,000 spectators for a weekend full of living history, including military and civilian encampments, battle scenarios, and special educational programs.

All proceeds from ticket sales go directly toward battlefield preservation and interpretation efforts. For more information, visit www.bentonvillereenactment.com.
