Workers at Novo Nordisk’s manufacturing expansion in Clayton placed the last steel beam on the first building to be constructed during a ceremony on Friday, acknowledging a critical milestone in the development of the new $2 billion site.
The new site on Powhatan Road represents the largest single manufacturing investment in North Carolina state history. Speakers shared the history of the tradition of topping off and employees signed the beam, cementing their role in the site’s history.
To meet the growing demand for Novo Nordisk diabetes treatments, the new facility will manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for current and future GLP-1 and insulin medicines.
The new site will bring about 700 new jobs once in operation – nearly doubling Novo Nordisk’s workforce in Johnston County – with up to 2,500 people working on the project at peak construction. Completion is scheduled for 2020.
