Betty Sugg Welch was born May 5, 1931 in Smithfield NC and died peacefully April 9, 2024.
She is the daughter of the late Burton Whitfield and Rose Gordon Sugg and was the 7th of 8 siblings. She was married to the late Ted Neal (Bo) Welch and is survived by her sons Carl W. Welch (Ruth) of Wendell NC and Gordon W. Welch of Wilmington, Delaware. She is also survived by her grandchildren Maura Welch Stewart (Brad), Vance Welch and Wiley Narron, great-grandchildren James and Cameron Stewart and Phoenix Welch, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Betty is predeceased by her son Neal Welch and her daughter Alice Narron.
After graduating as valedictorian from Smithfield High School, Betty spent many years working as a teacher’s assistant at various public schools in the area as well as the Presbyterian preschool. She loved working with children and was able to express her artistic talents by creating beautiful artwork for her classrooms. She was also an avid reader and loved working in her beautiful garden overlooking Holt Lake. Nothing made her happier than visiting with family and friends on her screened porch and watching the sunsets over the lake while listening to classical music. Betty was the epitome of a true southern lady, kind and gracious to everyone she met.
The funeral will be held on Sunday April 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield. Visitation from 2pm-3pm. The service will follow the visitation at 3pm.
