SELMA – Ernest Lynwood Price, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, May 27, 2024. Mr. Price was born April 7, 1931, in Johnston County to the late Ernest and Nedgie Ellen Price. Upon completion of his Military Service, he returned to Johnston County where he attended Wake Forest College and later taught at North Carolina State University.
Mr. Price was employed by the USDA, Tobacco Grading Company. In 1979, he was promoted to Assistant Regional Director and later promoted to the Regional Director in 1981. In 1988, Mr. Price was appointed to be the Director of the Tobacco Division, Agricultural Marketing Service, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Washington, DC. On October 2, 1992, he retired as Director of the Tobacco Division completing a distinguished career in government services for over 40 years. Mr. Price was also a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner.
He was married to the love of his life, Jeanette Whitley Price for 62 years until her passing in October 2018. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Price is preceded in death by his sister, Nellie Gray Moore, brother-in-law I.W. Moore and brother, Franklin “Frank†Delano Price.
Mr. Price is survived by his daughter, Sharon Price Parrish and husband, John, son, Gary Lynn Price and wife, Lucy and son, Kenneth Barton Price. He is also survived by grandchildren, Holly Price Carter and husband, Patrick, Marcy Price, Nicholas Price and Natalie Price as well as great granddaughter, Evelyn Ray Helms. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Katie Hocutt Price as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am – 11:30 am on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Thanksgiving Baptist Church located at 6701 NC 42 East Selma, NC 27576. A private interment service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Thanksgiving Baptist Church cemetery.
Flowers are welcomed or memorial contributions may be made to Thanksgiving Baptist Church.
