James Thomas King, 85, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at his home in Smithfield. Born October 31, 1939, in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Woodrow and Irene King. In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his brother, Ted King; and sisters, Bonnie Hooks and Linda Mitchell.

James had a deep love for life’s simple joys. A lifelong farmer, he took great pride in working the land and had a special fondness for old John Deere tractors. He never passed up a chance to go fishing and was well known for making his delicious fish stew. James also loved old country music and was often found dancing along to his favorite tunes. He adored his convertible Mustang, which brought him a youthful sense of freedom and joy even in his later years. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. James is survived by his daughters, Ann Wood (Dale) and Lynne Carroll (Swade); sisters, Sylvia Rose and Margie Wall; grandchildren, Hailey Godwin, Taylor Hines (Joel), and Amber Baudoux (Clay); great-grandchildren, Wrenleigh Godwin, Parker Hines, Tanner Melvin, and Ellie Melvin.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 2:00pm, in the Chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Ownley officiating . Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, from 1:00pm-2:00pm. Burial will follow in Hephzibah Baptist Church cemetery.
