SAFE Team Deputy Stops Alleged Street Race Near Clayton

CLAYTON, N.C. — Two Clayton men are facing charges after authorities said they were caught racing at speeds reaching 130 miles per hour on Interstate 42.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on June 2 while a Johnston County Sheriff’s Office SAFE Team deputy was conducting routine patrol on I-42 (U.S. 70) near Clayton.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy reportedly observed a BMW and an Infiniti engaged in a speed competition. Officers said the vehicles reached speeds of approximately 130 miles per hour before the deputy was able to stop both drivers.

Authorities charged James Anthony Stillman, 19, of Clayton, and Gavin Westin Manguson, 19, of Clayton, with engaging in a speed competition, reckless driving, and speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Both men were transported to the Johnston County Detention Center, where they were later released after posting $2,000 secured bonds.

No injuries were reported.
