LURA LEE LENNON GRIMES, formerly of Smithfield, 87 passed away peacefully, Wednesday, November 27, 2024, with her daughter at her side at SECU Jim and Betsy Bryan Hospice Home in Pittsboro, NC.
Born in New Hanover County August 11, 1937, to the late Elbert F. and Kathleen Shew Lennon she graduated from New Hanover High School and the South Carolina Baptist Hospital Nurses Training School in Columbia, South Carolina. She was a Registered Nurse in Johnston and Wake Counties for over 40 years before retirement. She was an active volunteer in the Smithfield community serving in many capacities at her church and with the county social services. However, it was service to her extended family that brought her the most joy.
She is survived by her only child, Karen Lynn Day and son-in-law Orin A. Day and their son, the light of her life, Joseph D. Day, all of Durham, NC. One sister, Betty Burgess of Sun City Center, Florida, one brother, Dan Lennon (and his wife Teresa) of Wilmington, NC, and one sister-in-law, Lynda Lennon of Fayetteville, NC. In addition to many much-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph L. Grimes and her brother, Elbert F. Lennon, Jr. The family will receive friends in the Ryberg Chapel of First Baptist Church Smithfield at 1pm Thursday, December 12, 2024, with a graveside service to follow at 2 pm in Oakland Cemetery, North Street, Smithfield led by Rev. Ben Adams, Rev. Kristin Tucker, and Rev. George Arant.
