Madeline Marjorie Braswell

    Birth Date: 07/05/1922
    Deceased Date: 10/13/2023

Madeline Pilkington Braswell, of Smithfield, was called home on Friday, October 13, 2023. She was born on July 5, 1922, to Ginny and Jesse Pilkington of Pine Level and, as the birthday sign on her door at Autumn Care said, she was still having fun at 101.

After the war, Madeline married Dewey R. Braswell of Smithfield on January 6, 1946, and they had three children- Peggy Lumsden, Kay Stewart, and Ronald Braswell. For thirty-one years she worked at Fieldcrest in Smithfield doing various jobs; when the plant closed, she worked in quality control for the company. Probably her favorite job was being grandma to her four grandchildren: Daniel Stewart, Treve Lumsden, Jessica Fisher, and Jenny Braswell and five great-grandchildren: Clayton Stewart, Madi Stewart, Treve Lumsden, Davis Lumsden, and Caleb Fisher, each of whom was worth at least a million dollars and she loved them more than anything in this world.

A lifelong member of Hephzibah Baptist Church, Madeline liked to be there to open the door and turn on the lights. She loved her church and her church family, teaching Sunday School, and singing in the choir. Her funeral will be held there on Tuesday, October 17, with the visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey, her two brothers, Rudolph Pilkington of Smithfield and Charles Glenn Pilkington of Selma, and her daughter, Kay Stewart of Smithfield. She will be missed by all who knew her.
