Ned Wilson Daughtry was born in Johnston County on June 7th, 1941, to the late William Herbert Daughtry and Margaret Louise Pilkington Daughtry. He married his wife of 62 years, Rachel Lee Johnson on July 5th, 1961. They had two children, Terry Wilson Daughtry and Portia Gay Daughtry, and raised them in their hometown of Smithfield.
Mr. Daughtry was a hardworking man who for over 20 years, ran his own business: Ned’s Wrecker and Garage Service, which later became known as Ned Daughtry Trucking, out of the shop behind his home. While he wasn’t working, he loved spending time camping at the beach and later on buying an old house at Harker’s Island. Mr. Daughtry was a caring husband and a wonderful father who also loved to have fun. He was sometimes a bit mischievous, but his mischief-making created some of his family’s fondest memories and the funny stories they relish in telling. He will be remembered for his happiness in life, work, and among his family and friends, outgoing and funny personality as well as his signature saying “whatever!”
He passed away peacefully on July 15th, 2024, in the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield. Ned is preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Johnson Daughtry, his parents, sister Sharon Daughtry Harris, brother Ted Wayne Daughtry, and son, Terry Wilson Daughtry. He was 83 years old.
