Roger Winston Root, age 85, died Wednesday evening at Parkwood Village in Wilson. Born in Erie County, NY on November 28, 1936 to the late William Harold and Helen Madeline Bateman Root, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Amber Root Dennison and a brother, Wayne Root.
As a small child, his family relocated to Chester, VA, where he lived until he entered the military. Roger was retired from the US Air Force after more than 20 years and was a member of the Selma American Legion. Following his retirement, he moved to Selma and began working with Bayer, Inc. in Clayton as an electronics engineer until he retired for a second time. He was very active in the Selma Development Partnership for many years serving for a time as its president.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Suzanne V. Root; daughters, Cindy R. Hollowell and husband Ken and Sandy R. Sigmon and husband Gregg all of Wilson; sisters, Sheren Beatie of Millsboro, DE and Jeanette Woodward of Leesville, FL; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
