    Benson: Mrs. Mabel Allen Byrd, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 3, 2020 at Smithfield Manor Nursing Home in Smithfield. Funeral Service will be 11:30 AM, Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson. Officiating will be Revs. Curtiss Tatum and Rodney Wilson. Burial will follow in Hodges Chapel Church Cemetery, Benson.
    Mrs. Byrd was born on March 12, 1923 in Johnston County to the late Edward and Lummie Parker Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ervin Byrd; sister, Eula Allen Kennedy; brothers, Holton Allen, Thomas Allen, Ben Allen, Ed Allen, Joseph Bright Allen. Mrs. Byrd was a homemaker and member of Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. She was a member of the American Legion Banner Post 109 Ladies Auxiliary in Benson, and Johnston County Extension Homemakers. Mrs. Byrd loved and cared for all of her family and her dogs.
    Surviving are daughters, Brenda Matthews Eason of Smithfield , Dorothy Byrd Raynor of Benson; grandchildren, Wendy Matthews, John David Matthews and fiance, Audrey, Crystal Raynor Barefoot and husband, John; great-grandsons, Matthew Guin and Miles Barefoot; several nieces and nephews.
    The family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 11:15AM Friday, February 7, 2020 prior to the service and other times at the home of Crystal and John Barefoot, 7961 Hwy 96 South Benson, NC 27504.
