BENSON – One person was killed in a Christmas morning traffic accident in Johnston County. The single vehicle collision was reported at 7:48am on Interstate 95 just south of Interstate 40.

According to the State Highway Patrol, a gray Ford Fiesta was traveling southbound on I-95 at the 81 mile marker. Based on information from an eyewitness and evidence gathered at the scene, the vehicle ran off the interstate to the left, struck the end of a metal guard rail, overturned, and came to rest in the right southbound lane.

The impact was so violent, the engine was ripped from the vehicle, landing on the grass shoulder.

The driver, Brigida Liza Santos, age 42, of Fayetteville, NC died at the scene. There were no passengers.

Southbound lanes of I-95 were detoured onto I-40 for approximately two hours before fully reopening.

  1. Jersey barrier with a blunt end in the shoulder, collapsible guard did nothing. How many lives have been claimed by this construction zone since it started, and when is it going to be finished?

My condolences to her poor family.

    • Keep it in the travel lane, slow down, and wear your seatbelt. Personal responsibility???? Or is that a thing of the past

  2. I thought these barriers were supposed to collapse when struck so occupants of a vehicle would have a better chance of survival.

  3. So many Central Americans around here. They aren’t good drivers. Most aren’t. They come here with no driving experience like we have here. The one that ran at 301 701 is probably Central American. I got money on it. No license.

    • You lost your money then. She was American 100% born and raised here.
You see a Spanish name and quickly assume immigrant. Stu bro I assume is for Stupid bro.. how’s that for an assumption.

  4. Stu Bro probably stands for Stupld Bro..
She’s as American 100% born and raised..
You see a Spanish name and quickly assume illegal. You have no respect. Guess you lost that money Bro..

  5. The barrier on the left did its job. A Fiesta can only offer so much protection, but the passenger compartment is pretty much intact. Had that barrier not been in place – the car would have suffered much more damage…. Just too many distractions for drivers now-a-days.
