Police Arrest Driver After Finding Narcotics In Wrecked Car, Report Says

SMITHFIELD – Things went from bad to worse for a Selma man involved in a traffic accident in the Smithfield city limits.

On January 15 around 2:01pm, Smithfield Police responded to a single vehicle accident on Hospital Road at N. Seventh Street. Officers arrived to find a 2001 Chevy Tahoe overturned on its side in the roadway.

Police said Zachary Ray Almon, age 28, of Jackson Street, Selma was traveling north on N. Seventh Street and failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection. The SUV ran off the roadway, collided with a ditch, and overturned.

Almon reportedly told police he was messaging on his phone when the crash occurred but denied running the stop sign. However, a witness told police Almon failed to stop at the stop sign.

While investigating the accident, police allegedly found suspected methamphetamine and marijuana in the wrecked vehicle. Almon allegedly admitted to police the narcotics belonged to him.

Zachary Almon was charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, and a stop sign violation. Bond was set at $30,000.

Almon sustained minor injuries in the collision but declined EMS transport to the hospital.
