Suspects Crash Stolen SUV While Fleeing From Police

SMITHFIELD – A stolen SUV was involved in a traffic accident while fleeing from Smithfield Police. Two people are facing charges.

It started around 9:27pm Tuesday. Police received a report of a robbery on Kay Drive, off S. Brightleaf Boulevard. Police were able to determine a 2004 Ford Expedition had been stolen. but the victim refused to cooperate with their investigation.

Around 3:32am Wednesday, an officer spotted the stolen SUV on North Brightleaf Boulevard near North Street. When police tried to stop the SUV, the driver accelerated to speeds of 90 mph in a 35 mph zone on North Brightleaf.

The driver tried to make a high-speed turn onto Peedin Road, but lost control and struck a utility pole guy wire. The driver and passenger jumped and ran.

After establishing a perimeter, a Smithfield Police K-9 and a Selma Police Department drone were utilized to track and apprehend the suspects.

The driver, Darnell Lavadie Langley, age 21, of S. Lombard Street, Clayton was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, fleeing to elude arrest, possession of stolen goods, resisting and delaying, and hit and run. Bond was set at $100,000.

A passenger, Justin Cameron Smith, age 20, of Commodore Street, Clayton was charged with two counts of felony conspiracy and one count of resisting and delaying. Bail was set $450,000.

    • The passenger is a repeat offender. I think they both should have crashed and burned! They could have killed innocent people or an LEO with their high rate of speed. Great job goes out to the Smithfield PD.
