The State Highway Patrol has charged a Coats police officer with causing a two vehicle accident. The collision occurred at 5:57pm Wednesday.

Troopers said Officer Conner Capshaw, 28, of Coats was operating a marked Coats police car eastbound on Cane Mill Road. Officer Capshaw failed to stop for a stop sign at Red Hill Church Road and collided with a Chevy Avalance driven by Nicholas Humbarger, 32, of Benson. After the impact the Chevy overturned.

Both drivers were transported to WakeMed where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.

Harnett County Highway Patrol Sgt. K.B. Parker said both drivers were wearing their seat belts and air bags did deploy. There were no passengers in the vehicles. Speed was not a contributing factor.
