Police officers who responded to an apartment fire Wednesday morning in Dunn are being credited with helping several people escape from the flames.
Around 2:00 am, the officers were responding to an unrelated call in the area when they noticed the fire at a large wood frame house which had been converted into 6 separate apartments. The officers ran into the burning building and began beating on the doors and windows to awaken the residents and help them get to safety.
One resident was in the process of dialing 911 when officers arrived. Fire crews from Harnett and Johnston counties responded to the fire. There were no injuries reported but many of the occupants lost everything. None of the residents had renters insurance, according to officials.
