SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Police Department has launched a new program allowing civilian traffic investigators to handle certain non-emergency duties, easing the workload of local police officers.
The town’s Public Safety Aid (PSA) program is responsible for investigating non-injury traffic accidents, enforcing town ordinances, and assisting officers with traffic control and crime scene management.
One of the PSA units primary duties is enforcing parking regulations, including violations such as parking in fire lanes, handicap spots, or on curbs. Since its inception, the unit has issued over 900 parking citations.
Police Chief Pete Hedrick praised the program for its efficiency, stating, “The PSA unit allows us to address public concerns regarding ordinance violations while freeing up police officers to respond to higher-priority calls, all while maintaining a high level of service.”
Looking ahead, Chief Hedrick hopes to expand the PSA unit in the coming years to further enhance public safety and law enforcement efficiency in Smithfield.
Chief, Smithfield is behind you all the way. Thanks for what y’all do!
I wish Selma would do this. They could give out a lot of citations for parking the wrong way in the wrong direction on the streets.
