Police Call For EMS After Seeing Suspect’s Breathalyzer Test Results

SELMA – Selma Police arrested a 32 year-old man on drunk driving charges after he reportedly crashed into a parked car. Officers said the suspect’s breathalyzer test was nearly five times above the legal limit of 0.08, causing concern for his health.

At 11:00pm Saturday, Sept. 30, officers responded to a traffic collision on N. Sumner Street (NC 96) at W. Richardson Street. According to an accident report, Jonathan Tavarez-Avila of Four Oaks was operating as 2013 Honda passenger car on Sumner Street when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a car parked in the driveway of a home.

Officers said Tavarez-Avila had an odor of alcohol on his breath and clothing, and his eyes were dark red and bloodshot. He allegedly admitted to drinking four shots of tequila and one Corona beer, but claimed that was four hours before the accident.

He reportedly registered 0.39, two times on the Breathalyzer, at the Selma police station. Due to his high level of alleged intoxication, police called Johnston County EMS to check his vitals and clear him to go to jail. Individuals with a blood alcohol content from 0.30 to 0.40 could potentially have alcohol poisoning, a potentially life-threatening condition.

Tavarez-Avila was charged with driving while impaired. He was released on a $2,500 bond, pending a November 7 court appearance.

Damage to his Honda was estimated at $2,500, and damage to the parked car was also placed at $2,500.
