Residents Allowed To Return Home After Gas Leak Is Contained

Several homes evacuated Monday morning after a natural gas line was ruptured in North Smithfield.  The gas leak was reported at 9:36am in the 1600 block of Dail Street off N. Brightleaf Boulevard.

Smithfield Police cordoned off several blocks around the gas leak as emergency personnel evacuated nearby homes.  The displaced residents were transported to First Baptist Church in Smithfield.

Piedmont Natural Gas crews arrived on the scene shortly after 10:00am and the leak was contained around 1:00pm.

Officials said there were numerous 911 calls reporting the gas odor at homes and businesses along N. Brightleaf and Canterbury Roads but it was all related to the Dail Street leak.

No injuries were reported.
