Retiree Scammed For $10,000

CLAYTON – Scammers continue to find ways to steal money from senior citizens. The latest scam reported involves a Clayton-area retiree. The victim said he received a phone call from someone claiming to be with USAA financial department.

They were able to convince the victim a fraud alert had been placed on their personal bank account and the caller needed online access. The victim provided his personal bank information, including his user name and password. Within minutes, $10,000 had been transferred out of his account.

The incident was reported to law enforcement two days later. At last check, law enforcement and the bank had not been successful in recovering the stolen funds.

  1. People!! Please have serious conversations with every elderly person you know. Tell them they absolutely cannot trust anyone who calls, texts or emails them. If the caller says they are from any bank or company, tell them they should hang up and call them at the number that is legitimate. They can’t trust anyone to be who they say they are. We live in a very different world than the one they grew up in. And for goodness sakes……never give your bank details to anyone!!
