A smoother ride is on its way for drivers traveling on a section of I-95 south of Rocky Mount in Nash County. Thanks to a $990,000 contract awarded to Triangle Grading & Paving Inc., deteriorating concrete roadway surface slabs on the interstate are going to be replaced for the southbound lanes over a five-mile section of the highway between mile markers 137 and 132.
This is the area between south of Future I-495/U.S. 64 (exit 138) and Sandy Cross Road (exit 132).
The work will require the closure of at least one of the two southbound lanes during the week. Normal traffic patterns are expected to be restored by 7 a.m. every Friday to avoid disrupting weekend traffic.
At certain locations along the project, the concrete slab replacement work may extend into both lanes, which will require the temporary closure of I-95 to provide adequate safety to both the traveling public as well as project personnel.
A signed detour will be in place to provide an alternate route for motorists at all times, including closures. The detour will send the southbound drivers off the highway at exit 132 (Sandy Cross Road), then south on N.C. 58 and west on N.C. 97 to get back to I-95 at Exit 127.
Similar concrete slab replacement work is planned in the northbound lanes in the vicinity of Exit 138. However this work will be conducted at a later date.
