A Johnston County woman says she was scammed out of a large amount of cash she placed in a rural mailbox. It happened last month.
The 54 year-old victim saw an ad on OfferUp.com for a utility trailer and riding lawnmower. She contacted the seller and they agreed on a price of $2,000 for the items. She was instructed to make the payment in cash and leave the money in a mailbox at an address in western Johnston County. After leaving the large sum of cash in the mailbox she never heard back from the seller and never received the items.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is following up on some leads in the case.
