School Board Member Challenges Residency Of Opponent

SMITHFIELD – The Johnston County Board of Elections has scheduled a date to hear evidence in a candidate challenge complaint.

Johnston County school board member Ronald Johnson filed a formal complaint on December 19 challenging the residency of David Marshburn.

Johnson is seeking reelection to District 7. He has opposition from three people, including Mr. Marshburn during the upcoming March 2024 primary.

In the complaint, Johnson alleges Marshburn does not meet the statutory requirements of living in District 7, and claims his primary residence is in District 5, and should not be allowed to run for office.

Johnson contends in the complaint Marshburn rented a home on S. Robertson Street in Clayton for the sole purpose of seeking an elected position on the Board of Education in District 7, but alleges Marshburn still maintains his primary residence on Twin Oaks Road, which is in another school board district.

The Board of Elections has agreed to hear the candidate challenge on January 3, 2024 at 9:00am in the Board of Commissioners Meeting Room at the Johnston County Courthouse.  The meeting is open to the public and will also be livestreamed.

Mr. Marshburn is one of several people named in a federal lawsuit filed by Mr. Johnson in June 2023. That lawsuit is still pending.

  1. This is the epitome of the ten cent millionaires of JoCo. Rent a house to run for school board? Really? That is the saddest thing I have read in a while. Get out of JoCo once in a while. There’s a whole big world out there! Or better yet, get out and don’t come back…if you’re brave enough. God help the kids in JoCo Public Schools.

    • Back in 1996-97 David Marshburn did some general contractor work for a dear late friend of mine in Clayton. I went to Clayton High with him and his mother was one of my school teachers. David left my friend with an overpriced unfinished mess. The type that leaves some contractors on the news and in jail. I have heard all about his defunct non profit “come find me foundation” or whatever it was called that fell into non compliance with the IRS. Not sure about his bail Bond business. Seems he can’t decide what to do with his life but 27 years ago he was a rip off contractor.

  2. And our school board back at it again. Honestly its a school board its not like its a seat in Congress or the HoR. I don’t see RJ getting re-elected anyway, most of the people that supported him before don’t now and well its about time the focus gets back to the children in the schools not the ones sitting on the school board.

    • I guess you didn’t read the article. A board member is questioning the legitimate residency of a potential candidate. If you recall, we had a board member who was not residing in the county and resigned, as she should have. Mr. Johnson is trying to prevent this from happening again. Did you not want him to? If so, I question why you would object?

  3. I support RJ and always will . The only thing he has done is caught people breaking rules . Ruffled feathers . People break the rules and think they should get away with it . Crooked from the beginning. He has been treated unfair .

  4. Renting a house to run for school board is sad, but it’s not as sad as being fired from the police department.

  5. Talking about weird! Speaking on Marshburn ? Why is this guy Johnson still on the board after all the lies double handed things that he has done ? SMH
