Second Fire Being Investigated As Possible Arson

For the second time in less than two weeks a vacant house in East Smithfield has burned.  Authorities don’t think they are connected but both appear to be arson.

Around 8:30pm Saturday, fire crews responded to a fire in the 400 block of Collier Street and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a house. Crews worked for about 30 minutes before bringing the blaze under control. Smithfield Police Captain R. Sheppard said the home was in the process of being remodeled but was vacant when the fire broke out.

On Nov. 27th, a vacant home in the 800 block of Midway Street caught fire and burned.  Police said that blaze was also suspicious and could be arson.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to contact Smithfield Police at 919-934-2121 or the Smithfield Police Tip Line at 919-989-8835.
