Selma Fire Department Earns New ISO Class 2 Rating

SELMA — The Selma Fire Department has earned a Class 2 Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating from the Insurance Services Office, a distinction that places the department among the top-performing fire agencies in the country. The new rating takes effect Jan. 1, 2026.
The ISO rating evaluates a fire department’s ability to prevent and respond to fires, including training, staffing, equipment, water supply, and emergency communications. Class 1 represents the highest score, and Class 10 the lowest. Only a small percentage of fire departments nationwide achieve a Class 2 rating.
Selma Fire Phillip McDaniel said the improved classification reflects years of investment in training, equipment upgrades and collaboration with local and regional partners.

Town leaders noted that the upgraded rating may also benefit homeowners and businesses, as insurance companies often use ISO scores when determining premiums.
The department credited cooperation from municipal staff, partnering agencies and residents for helping reach the milestone.
