Sen. Benton Sawrey Appointed To Key Oversight Committees For 2025-26 Interim Session
RALEIGH — State Senator Benton Sawrey (R-Johnston) has been appointed to serve on several influential legislative oversight committees during North Carolina’s 2025-26 interim session, according to an announcement from Senate leadership this week.

Sawrey will serve as co-chair of the Medicaid Oversight Committee and as a member of both the Education Oversight Committee and the Health & Human Services Oversight Committee.
The appointments were made by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham), who emphasized the importance of interim work in shaping future legislation.
“As we prepare for next year’s legislative session, these committees will get to work examining the most pressing issues facing our state,” Berger said. “I look forward to seeing what proposals the committees pursue and working with the members to usher their priorities over the finish line.”
The joint legislative oversight committees include members from both chambers of the General Assembly, with co-chairs appointed by the House and Senate.
In a statement, Sawrey expressed appreciation for the opportunity and highlighted the role of the committees in addressing statewide challenges.
“I’m grateful to have been appointed to serve on these important interim committees,” Sawrey said. “These committees will be tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing our state – strengthening our schools, improving health care, and ensuring accountability in Medicaid. I look forward to working with my colleagues to deliver meaningful results for the people of North Carolina.”
The legislative interim period allows lawmakers to examine key policy areas, conduct hearings, and prepare legislation ahead of the next full session.
