SMITHFIELD – A southbound driver on Interstate 95 suffered a medical emergency and lost control of his car, Saturday afternoon.

The car drove off the interstate in front of Carolina Premium Outlets, stuck a large tree, crashed through a ditch, then collided with a power pole.

The driver was unconscious following the crash but quickly received aid from fellow drivers, EMS and Smithfield firefighters before being rushed to Wake Medical Center.

Power was knocked out in the area.  Duke energy crews estimated the roadway, Outlet Center Drive, would be shut down for several hours while they replace the broken pole and power lines.

The NC State Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

  1. For this man to still me alive is a miracle, His Guardian angel was with him and he will be covered in my prayers.

    • I was at work at Harley Davidson when the power went out. We went out to see what was going on and saw that car demolished. I agree that there definitely was a reason anyone survived! Thank you Jesus.
