A Smithfield store clerk was assaulted by a shoplifting suspect. Police said it happened at 11:50am Tuesday at the Champion Outlet on Outlet Center Drive.
A 49 year-old employee reportedly saw two people placing merchandise into a duffle bag. The employee confronted one of the suspects, who shoved the employee. Both suspects ran out the door. While fleeing, they dropped the duffle bag containing $600 in stolen clothing items.
The clerk was not injured. No arrests have been made.
