Smithfield Applies For NC DOT Pedestrian Planning Grant

In a unanimous vote, the Smithfield Town Council has authorized Town Manager Mike Scott to apply for a NC Department of Transportation Pedestrian Planning Grant.

If awarded, the Town of Smithfield could receive up to $75,000 with the Town having to make a 20 percent match, or $15,000.  The grant is through the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Program.

Once a pedestrian plan is in place, the Town of Smithfield will be well positioned to pursue funding opportunities with the NC DOT for pedestrian projects, Planning Director Stephen Wensman said in a report to the Council.  The plan will also help Smithfield prioritize its spending on future pedestrian facility projects.

The deadline to apply for the grant is August 2nd.

Funds for the matching portion of the grant is included in the current 2019-20 fiscal year budget.
