Smithfield Checkpoint Results In 27 Traffic, Drug Charges
SMITHFIELD, N.C. – A multi-agency DWI checkpoint on U.S. 301 in Smithfield Saturday night resulted in 27 charges ranging from driver’s license and registration violations to misdemeanor drug offenses. The checkpoint was conducted on South Brightleaf Boulevard.
Smithfield Police partnered with several local, county and state agencies for the operation.
Of the 27 charges issued, 10 involved vehicle registration violations and seven were for driving without an operator’s license.
Officers also issued one charge for driving while license revoked, one insurance violation, one inspection violation, one child restraint violation, one rear lamp violation and one revoked license plate violation.
Two misdemeanor drug charges and one drug paraphernalia charge were also issued, along with one open container violation.
No DWI charge was listed among the 27 violations reported by Smithfield Police.
Agencies participating in the checkpoint included the Selma Police Department, N.C. State Highway Patrol, N.C. Department of Transportation Incident Management Assistance Patrol, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office and Dunn Police Department.
Smithfield Police said these checkpoints aren’t just about writing tickets — they’re about preventing crashes, encouraging responsible driving, and making sure everyone gets home safely.

If anyone cares, the cost for this one night checkpoint was $2.7 million (you can see for yourself, all the department budgets are public). Look for the “September Special Enforcement Activity.”
And not a single DUI issued.

Nah, Fake news, most of those guys were all working and get paid either way. Also the equipment just sitting around not being used anyway. It’s a play on numbers, The supervisors get salary and get paid wether they are sitting at home or out working. It doesn’t really cost much more than regular patrol around the county on a normal night, just had a few troopers come in from wake and wayne, but again they were gatting paid either way

If what you say is true, and this DUI checkoint cost US 2.7 MILLION dollars, I would say it sounds like a WASTE! Terrible return on Investment.. all this money and time spent, just to give out expired registration tickets is ridiculous.. Id assume those same officers sitting there twiddling thumbs, could be out observing for actual drunk drivers on the road…

I see this as money well spent on checking travelers on our roads, sure you can say 2.7 million but either way, that money would have been spent on policing that night….but if you want to talk about “wasting” tax dollars I know a baseball stadium in-process that costs a WHOLE LOT more than this for a team I had never heard of before last year!!!

Claiming it’s OK to violate personal liberties as long as you violate EVEYRONE’S personal liberty is a disgrace.
Driving on a public highway is a privledge, not a “Right”. You must be insured, licensed, not under the influence. If your in your driveay or curtilage of your private home you can do as you wish as far as sitting behind the wheel, otherwise you forfeit any expectation of privacy and have certain obligations as far as rules of the road. These checkpoints discourage drinking and driving or ridin dirty.
You retain your constitutional rights when you’re on a sidewalk, correct? Cop can’t make you turn your pockets inside out to make sure you’re not carrying a pocket knife with a blade longer than 3″ , right? Why should we put up for it on the road? If cops have probable cause I’m all for them acting. Being detailed with no probable cause is ridiculous.
Your point about drinking and driving being discouraged by checkpoints, is just an opinion, unless you have some evidence to support it.
It was dark out, I was in bed or getting ready, you’re driving around after midnight with loud music and can’t figure it out ? I can’t help ya !
Why do people complain when the police don’t do there job, and then complain when they do. There is just no satisfying some people. I have no problem with check points. Whether it brings results or not. In either cases, the citations they gave was because they were breaking the law. Maybe the person with the insurance violation should run into your car. And when you are footing the bill, see if it is meaningless then.
Just one more example of our fine police state !
If you can show that there’s any reduction in uninsured motorists because of checkpoints, please let us know.
Is there any reduction in DUI’s. In case you haven’t notice people are still being arrested for it. Just because something is changing at the pace you have set, doesn’t mean they should stop doing their jobs.

If you are compliant, current registration, drivers license (not expired or revoked). Not driving under ANY influence, obeying driving laws, (not speeding), etc, driving safely, NOT tailgating or again speeding, or lane swerving. Not driving a stolen vehicle, or are involved in any type of criminal activity, currently wanted, or not yet found out….
A checkpoint is a welcome site, for those who are victims of any of the above.
