Smithfield Checkpoint Results In 27 Traffic, Drug Charges

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – A multi-agency DWI checkpoint on U.S. 301 in Smithfield Saturday night resulted in 27 charges ranging from driver’s license and registration violations to misdemeanor drug offenses. The checkpoint was conducted on South Brightleaf Boulevard.

Smithfield Police partnered with several local, county and state agencies for the operation.

Of the 27 charges issued, 10 involved vehicle registration violations and seven were for driving without an operator’s license.

Officers also issued one charge for driving while license revoked, one insurance violation, one inspection violation, one child restraint violation, one rear lamp violation and one revoked license plate violation.

Two misdemeanor drug charges and one drug paraphernalia charge were also issued, along with one open container violation.

No DWI charge was listed among the 27 violations reported by Smithfield Police.

Agencies participating in the checkpoint included the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Selma Police Department, Benson Police Department, Clayton Police Department, Four Oaks Police Department, N.C. State Highway Patrol, N.C. Department of Transportation Incident Management Assistance Patrol, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office and Dunn Police Department.

Smithfield Police said these checkpoints aren’t just about writing tickets — they’re about preventing crashes, encouraging responsible driving, and making sure everyone gets home safely.
