The Smithfield city limits could grow by an additional 193 acres. Samet Properties, the developer of the West Smithfield Industrial Park, has submitted a petition to the Town for voluntary annexation. The annexation includes the Amazon warehouse site being built in the industrial park on W. Market Street (US 70 Business West).

On May 10th, Amazon announced they would operate a state-of-the-art import processing center in Smithfield creating over 500 jobs with a starting wage of $15 per hour and comprehensive benefits. The 620,000 square foot warehouse is expected to begin operations in 2022.

The annexation petition includes the 169.7 acre Amazon site plus an adjacent 23.3 acre parcel that will likely be developed into warehouse facilities and a future road in the business park to access industrial properties, according to documents. Both tracts of land have road frontage on W. Market Street.

A public hearing for the voluntary annexation will be held in August.
