Smithfield Council Approves Permits For Two New Businesses
SMITHFIELD — The Smithfield Town Council approved special use permits for two new businesses along North Brightleaf Boulevard during a recent meeting.
Adrenaline Designs, a tattoo establishment, will operate at 1247 N. Brightleaf Blvd. in the Center Point Plaza shopping center. The 1,200-square-foot retail space is located in a B-3 (Highway Entrance Business) district, surrounded by a mix of retail and personal service businesses. Planning staff recommended approval, noting that the tattoo parlor would have no adverse impact on nearby properties.
Council members also discussed a proposed ordinance amendment reviewed by the Planning Board in January 2025 that would remove the requirement for tattoo establishments to obtain a special use permit. While the amendment is intended to reflect current industry standards and state regulations, a public hearing before the Town Council has not yet been scheduled, meaning the special use process was still required for Adrenaline Designs.
The council also approved a special use permit for Aruza Pest Control Inc., which will operate an exterminating service at 1338-A N. Brightleaf Blvd. The business will share a multi-tenant commercial building with an industrial supply company. Staff noted that only small quantities of licensed insecticides will be stored on site, posing minimal risk to neighboring properties.
Both approvals were granted following public hearings, with no opposition to either business from the council or public.
