Smithfield Lifts Precautionary Boil Water Advisory Following Hydrant Damage

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The Town of Smithfield has lifted a precautionary voluntary boil water advisory issued Friday after testing confirmed the town’s drinking water meets all state and federal safety standards.

The advisory was issued after damage to a fire hydrant on Massey Street caused periods of low water pressure in the affected area. Low water pressure can increase the risk of contaminants entering the water distribution system, prompting the town to issue the advisory as a precaution while repairs were completed and water quality testing was conducted.

Town officials announced Sunday morning that laboratory testing has confirmed the water is safe for consumption.

Residents and businesses in the affected area may immediately resume normal use of tap water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, preparing food and all other household purposes. Boiling water is no longer necessary.
