1 Person Shot In The Leg
SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Police are investigating three shooting incidents they say are connected. Around 2:45pm Monday, officers responded to a report of shots being fired, possibly between occupants in two vehicles, on Blount Street near Martin Street. Minutes later, police were dispatched to shots being fired on E. Dundee Street near S. Brightleaf Boulevard, possibly between occupants in different vehicles.
Police said they found evidence connected to the two shootings near the intersection of S. Sixth and Lee Streets but did not release details on what evidence they recovered.
Around 2:45am today (Tuesday), officers on routine patrol heard gunshots being fired in the area of 1100 Harris Street. Just before police arrived, a 911 call was made reporting one person had been shot outside a residence. Police found 35 year-old Donald Smith suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper leg. Smith was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Police Captain R. Sheppard said all three shootings were connected and investigations are following up on several leads in the case. He said the shootings were not random acts.
