The Smithfield Public Utilities Department has received two awards for maintaining high water quality and sanitary sewer collection.
The North Carolina American Water Works Association & Water Environment Federation Award (NC AWWA-WEA) Water Distribution System of the Year Award was presented to the Town for pro-active practices of management, operations and maintenance of the water distribution system beyond minimum standards. Smithfield was 1 of only 3 systems statewide to receive the award in 2018.
The Town also received the Sanitary Sewer Collection System of the Year Award. Three wastewater collection systems in the state are recognized annually. Smithfield won their size category but was also given the honor of Overall Winner.
Both awards honor and recognize safe practices, efficient use of labor, materials, equipment, a high level of professionalism and diligent work in the operation and maintenance of facilities. Photo courtesy Town of Smithfield
