Smithfield Shooting Suspect Captured Out Of State

SMITHFIELD – The suspect in the shooting of a Smithfield woman last week was captured Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware. Benjamin Blakely was arrested by the US Marshals Service and Wilmington, Delaware Police.

Blakely was wanted for the shooting of his girlfriend on Feb. 29 inside a home on Whitley Drive in West Smithfield.

Blakely is currently awaiting extradition to North Carolina. He will be formally charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill once he is returned.

The shooting victim continues to recover from her injuries.
