Smithfield To Dedicate New Downtown Pocket Park On Aug. 11
SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A new public gathering space in downtown Smithfield is complete, and community members are invited to celebrate its official opening.
The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation will host a dedication ceremony for the new pocket park at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 305 E. Market St., adjacent to the Public Library.
The ceremony will include the unveiling of the park’s official name, selected through a community naming contest, and recognition of the winning entry.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to view a newly installed mural, meet the organizations and volunteers involved in the project, and enjoy complimentary popsicles.
Located at the corner of East Market and South Third streets, the pocket park was developed through a partnership involving the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation, the Town of Smithfield, Johnston County and the Johnston County Visitors Bureau.
The new park is intended to provide a place where residents and visitors can relax while exploring downtown.
“We are so excited to finally share this space with the community,” said Heidi Gilmond, executive director of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation. “This project has been a true team effort, and we can’t wait to celebrate the people and partnerships that helped make it happen. And, of course, we’re excited to finally reveal the name!”

Aww how nice. The homeless people will now have a nicer place to hang out at anytime they feel like it. Money well spent.
@Eric: Pocket parks like these have been proven to reduce crime and increase foot traffic to local businesses with a 3 block area (per the NIH and SEI studies). They account or some of the highest ROI municipal spending.
Drove Market Street yesterday. Felt like I was driving thru an abandoned town.
Looks like it may be beside the Library? That’s awesome! Great spot to sit outside and read a book. Not everyone has that luxury at home, especially in apartments. Love this! Hope other towns around Smithfield will take notice and add some pocket parks. Great use of space!
