Johnston County Schools were closed Thursday allowing students time to enjoy the winter weather. Snow accumulations varied across Johnston County, ranging from 1 to 3 inches.
The snow will likely stick around a few more days as temperatures Friday and Saturday will not get above freezing.
The NC Department of Transportation pre-treated primary road with brine before the winter storm arrived Wednesday evening. The DOT will concentrate snow-clearing efforts on major routes including I-95, I-40, US 70, US 301, NC 42 and NC 50 before turning to secondary roadways.
Thursday’s high of 33 degrees in Smithfield did little to help melt the snow, but what did melt will refreeze tonight with temperatures dropping to 13 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for black ice and hazardous travel conditions through 7:00am Thursday.
Friday’s temperatures will not get above freezing. The forecast high is only 29 degrees followed by a low Friday night of 10.
Saturday will continue to be cold. Daytime highs will reach 29 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, but will fall to 9 degrees for a low Saturday night.
We will see temperatures reach only 33 on Sunday. More seasonal weather returns on Monday with a forecast high of 50 and a chance of afternoon rain showers.
