South Johnston Graduate Awarded $14,000 Scholarship
FOUR OAKS, N.C. – A Johnston County student is among 215 recipients statewide selected to receive a Golden LEAF Scholarship, a competitive award designed to support students from rural North Carolina communities as they pursue higher education.
The Golden LEAF Foundation announced Daniel Pineda, a graduate of South Johnston High School, has been awarded the scholarship and plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall.
The scholarship provides up to $14,000 over four years to eligible students attending participating four-year colleges and universities in North Carolina. Recipients may receive $3,500 annually toward their undergraduate education.
According to the Golden LEAF Foundation, the scholarship program prioritizes students who demonstrate strong career goals and a commitment to returning to rural North Carolina communities after graduation. The program also recognizes students with personal or family ties to the state’s tobacco industry, honoring the agricultural heritage that has played a significant role in many rural communities.
Daniel was selected from a pool of more than 1,400 applicants across the state.
“We are proud to award scholarships to hardworking students with deep roots in their communities,” said Scott T. Hamilton, president and chief executive officer of the Golden LEAF Foundation. “Chosen from more than 1,400 applicants, these students represent the future of rural North Carolina. We look forward to their accomplishments as they continue their education and become North Carolina’s next generation of leaders.”
In addition to scholarship funding, recipients are eligible to participate in the Golden LEAF Rural Internship Initiative, which provides paid internship opportunities in rural communities across North Carolina. The program allows students to gain professional experience related to their career field while helping strengthen local economies.
State lawmakers representing Johnston County also congratulated Pineda on receiving the scholarship.
“Congratulations to the student from Johnston County who earned the Golden LEAF Scholarship,” said Rep. Donna McDowell White. “This honor recognizes your commitment to making a difference, and I am proud to see what you will accomplish in the years ahead.”
Rep. Larry Strickland said the award reflects Pineda’s dedication and ambition.
“This recognition reflects your hard work and ambition, and I wish you continued success as you pursue your goals,” Strickland said.
Rep. Howard Penny noted the importance of investing in students who may one day return to serve rural communities.
“A strong future for our rural communities depends on students who are prepared to lead and innovate,” Penny said. “The Golden LEAF Scholarship helps make that possible by supporting students as they pursue their education and return home ready to contribute.”
Since its creation in 2000, the Golden LEAF Scholarship Program has awarded more than 6,300 scholarships to students from rural North Carolina counties. The program is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority on behalf of the Golden LEAF Foundation.
