Suspected Dump Truck Thief Found Sitting In Ditch, JCSO Says


SMITHFIELD – Johnston County deputies made a quick arrest following the theft of a Ford dump truck and equipment trailer parked on Iris Road near Four Oaks.  It was stolen Sunday afternoon, July 2.

The truck and trailer were found a short time later on Hummingbird Road with no apparent damage.

Witnesses reported seeing the possible suspect walk away.  Deputies searched the area but could not find the man.

Later, the suspect was spotted sitting in a ditch, wearing only khaki shorts, at the intersection of Highway 210 and Berea Church Road.

Hunter Dustin Messer, age 36, of Fuquay Varina was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony larceny.  He was held on a $70,000 secured bond at the Johnston County Jail.

In June 2023, Messer was arrested for allegedly vandalizing the Sanders Grove Baptist Church cemetery on NC Highway 210.

    • I’m waiting for his “sister” to come jump on you again Steve. Maybe this time she’ll explain how he was just moving the dump truck out of harm’s way and people just don’t understand. Maybe it’s time for “sister” to realize he’s a menace and needs to be locked up for a long time.

  2. Hunter Messer is a good man. He’s hardworking, he has a way with words and being very social, he is also multi-talented. Whatever he puts he’s mind to, you bet he will figure it out. He was my landscaper, maintenance man for quite sometime. He is very reliable and trustworthy. Hes mother passed just last year. He’s just having a hard time. Cut him a break. Everyone makes mistakes. Yes, he knows better, but no one knows what’s going on in anybody’s personal life. He’s a son, brother, and a friend to many, and much more. He’s just broken right now. He will stand up tall again, I have faith and I’m praying for him and his people. Bless you Mr. Messer. I hope I get to hire you back as my employee and property manager when you get out. Haven’t been able to find anyone as independent and striving as this kind man.
