Teen Driver Falls Asleep, Causing Deadly Highway 70 Crash

A 19 year-old driver reportedly fell asleep and crossed the median on Highway 70, slamming into another vehicle Sunday morning killing a 35 year-old Clayton man.

The fatal two vehicle collision happened just after 6:00AM on Highway 70 near Town Centre Boulevard in Clayton.

Clayton Police said 19-year-old Gavin Eugene Knight was driving eastbound when he reportedly fell asleep while driving. Knight drifted to the left, crossed the median into oncoming traffic, striking and killing 35-year-old Torey Vernell Rascoe of Clayton, as he was driving his white Nissan Maxima.

Rascoe was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Knight was transported to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton for minor injuries. Police said a breath test showed no alcohol in his system.

Knight was charged with reckless driving and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Traffic on Highway 70 was reduced to one lane westbound for about an hour and 45 minutes.
