Teen Receives Two Big Honors In The Same Week

CLAYTON – On Sunday, June 2nd, an Eagle Scout Ceremony was held for Wyatt Mitchell Harrison. The Eagle Award is the highest and most coveted rank in Scouting.

The awarding of the Eagle rank is an important occasion and the goal for which a Scout works for many years.

Marine Corps League, Carry-On Detachment 1236, Past Commandant Bo Bull Durham, awarded the Good Citizenship award to Wyatt Harrison from Boy Scout Troop 124 of Horne Memorial United Methodist Church in Clayton.

Wyatt is the son of Edna and Brian Harrison of Clayton. Wyatt began his scouting career as a Tiger Cub in Pack 124. He earned his Arrow of Light, the highest award achievable in Cub scouting. Wyatt then crossed over into Boy scouts, joining Troop 124, where he earned his first official rank of “Scout Rank” in August of 2017, beginning his climb toward Eagle.

Wyatt’s journey toward Eagle has been steady and consistent. His scouting years are marked with countless campouts and service to the community. Wyatt has held leadership positions within Troop 124, including Troop Guide, Chaplain’s Aide, Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader.

As Troop Guide, Wyatt notably navigated the “COVID” years of scouting – providing guidance to new scouts during break-out session zoom meetings. As the pandemic progressed, Wyatt was able to provide guidance to new scouts during outdoor meetings.

Wyatt had the privilege of attending Philmont Scout Ranch in July of 2021.

Wyatt’s Eagle Scout Project, titled “East Clayton Community Park Orienteering Course”, has positioned a one-mile, beginner, orienteering course in the Clayton community. The course allows community members the ability to learn the basics of orienteering, and scouts can use this course to refine their orienteering skills.

The Eagle Scout is the first of two big achievements for Wyatt this week. On Friday, June 7 he will graduate from Corinth Holders High School. He plans to attend Western Carolina University in the fall majoring in Business Administration and Law.
