Woman Fatally Struck By Car While Riding Bicycle

SMITHFIELD – The State Highway Patrol has released the name of a Smithfield woman struck and killed while riding her bicycle. The accident happened Saturday, September 16 at 7:51pm on Baker’s Chapel Road, in the Brogden community, east of Smithfield.

Troopers said a 46 year-old Princeton man was traveling north on Baker’s Chapel Road and swerved to avoid a male riding his bicycle in the travel lane. The driver got back into his travel lane, then saw a woman on her bicycle, but could not avoid striking her.

Amanda Christine Huggins, age 33, of Brogden Road, Smithfield was ejected from her bicycle. Ms. Huggins was rushed to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigating officers.

Troopers said the bicycle Ms. Huggins was operating did not have lights and she was not wearing any reflective clothing.

After consulting with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, the Highway Patrol said no charges would be filed.
