Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck By Car

GOLDSBORO — No charges will be filed against the driver of a car that struck a pedestrian. Saturday morning around 1:45am, Goldsboro Police, Wayne County EMS, and fire personnel were dispatched to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 70 West (West Grantham St) near I-795.

Goldsboro Police said Leland Underhill and his wife, April Underhill, 41, of Goldsboro, were walking east in the eastbound lane of US 70 W next to the curb. The Underhills were pushing a shopping cart and another small cart.

Both were dressed in dark clothing. Mr. Underhill was carrying a small flashlight.

A vehicle traveling eastbound on US 70 W, operated by a female driver, struck Ms. Underhill with the right front portion of the vehicle. Mr. Underhill was not struck and was not injured in the crash.

The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with officers conducting the investigation. She was later transported to UNC Health Wayne for evaluation of minor injuries.

Ms. Underhill was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police said neither speed nor alcohol on the part of the vehicle’s driver were contributing factors in the traffic crash. Ms. Underhill was found to be in the roadway when she was struck.
