An 11 year-old boy was struck by gunfire this afternoon (Wednesday) inside his home.
The victim was rushed to the Pikeville Police Department where medical personnel were summoned. The child was then transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, a man was cleaning a rifle in his home on Canary Lane near Pikeville around 2:10pm today. The firearm accidentally discharged. The bullet deflected off a metal gun safe and some of the bullet fragments struck the child.
Detectives responded to the hospital to question the young victim and family members.
The case remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. The victim is in the hospital in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
