ABC Permits Suspended At Dunn Bar After Fatal Shooting
DUNN, N.C. — Following an investigation by the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division (ALE), The 601 Bar’s ABC permits have been summarily suspended by the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABC Commission) reportedly after multiple acts of violence, most recently a fatal shooting in the early hours of August 2, 2026.
On Sunday, August 2, the Dunn Police Department responded to a reported shooting at The 601 Bar, located 601 N Fayetteville Ave. that left two individuals deceased and two others injured.
“Following an ALE investigation into violence and controlled substance violations linked to The 601 Bar, the ABC Commission suspended the establishment’s permits,” said Bryan House, Director of ALE. “While suspended, the business is prohibited from selling or serving any alcoholic beverages. We are hopeful this action will prevent future violence at this location and make this community safer.”
The 601 Bar has a long history of assaults and numerous calls for service, including fights, disturbances, controlled substance violations and ABC violations occurring on or around the licensed premises, according to ALE. As a result of the August 2 incident and the history of violence occurring at the location that was documented during the investigation, the ABC Commission has suspended the businesses ABC permits.

As someone who is most definitely all about making a community safer I can understand the decision the ALE made when it comes to this establishment. Frankly I would love to read about many more decisions such as this and then maybe we would start to see them go out of business all together which could have a ripple effect with less drinking and driving and then less loss of lives. Sure I know this is a fantasy because the state would never allow all that money 💰 🤑 to be cut off from their slush fund no matter how many lives it would save.
My question would be to the ALE or those who pushed to have this decision made for this particular bar “Why did it take the lives of two people before this action was taken?” 🤔 According to this report the establishment has had multiple acts of violence before these shootings. lI’m sure the loved ones of the deceased probably would like the answer to my question as much as I do if not more so.

Of course its terrible that lives were lost because of this violence, and someone’s meanness, but this isn’t the first establishment this has happened too, and it will unfortunately not be the last! This closing is not the normal protocol for this criminal behavior! If it were there would be no where to go to hear a band, or enjoy an adult beverage among friends! I suspect there should be oversight for the “ALE Agency ” it appears they are picking and choosing their punishment for publicity purposes, because The ALE should most likely be shut down themselves for their own personal violations, of allowing underage drinking, drug use, etc! Someone should be investigating their own behaviors and what and whom they allow too get away with violations! If an establishment is indeed in need of being violated, it should definitely be done before a murder has happened, not for the agency to appear to be doing the work they have been selected to do after the fact! Just looks like they are playing politics 🙄
