Alleged Scammer Arrested At Charlotte-Douglass Airport

(MECKLENBURG COUNTY and JONES COUNTY, N.C.) — On March 18, 2026, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation regarding an alleged scam targeting a Jones County family.
Investigators said the suspect contacted victims and falsely claimed their bank account had been compromised, then demanded payment to resolve the issue—a tactic commonly used in financial fraud schemes.
Following a month-long investigation, the State Bureau of Investigation’s Coastal District, in coordination with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Christopher Aaron Murray, 40, of Cary.
Murray is charged with:
- One count of felony conspiracy
- One count of felony obtaining property by false pretenses
- One count of felony exploitation of a disabled or elderly person in a position of trust
- One count of impersonating a law enforcement officer
Murray was taken into custody April 26 by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. He was transported to the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
The investigation remains ongoing, and investigators believe there may be additional victims. Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized is encouraged to contact the Jones County Sheriff’s Office or the State Bureau of Investigation’s Coastal District office.
No additional information has been released.
