Benson To Honor Local Entrepreneur Linwood Sanders For Black History Month

BENSON — The Town of Benson and the Benson Museum of Local History have announced that this year’s Black History Month honoree is Benson resident and entrepreneur Linwood Sanders, affectionately known by many as “Rabb.”

A lifelong member of the Benson community, Sanders is known for his generosity, mentorship, and dedication to helping others. From coaching youth football and softball to mentoring local kids and supporting families in need, Sanders has spent decades enriching the community. He has gone above and beyond coaching duties with Benson Parks and Recreation, ensuring players had rides to practices and games and assisting families with sports equipment when needed.

“Mr. Sanders is fondly remembered for his coaching work here in Benson,” said Derrick Barefoot, Benson Cultural Arts Director. “We are looking forward to honoring him and recognizing the difference he has made over the years.”

Beyond sports, Sanders has left his mark as a licensed barber, formerly cutting hair locally while still owning Ray’s Hair Center in Dunn. He is also a successful business owner, having operated Quality Time Towing in the McGee’s Crossroads area for nearly 25 years.

“Linwood is a family-oriented man… and a friend to the community,” one nomination states. “He is keenly aware of his calling to be of help to his fellow man.” Sanders also serves as a deacon at Small’s Chapel Church of God in the Meadow community and enjoys rabbit hunting in his spare time.

As part of the celebration, a mini-documentary highlighting Sanders’ impact on Benson will premiere at the event.

The 15th Annual Black History Month Celebration honoring Linwood Sanders will be held Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the Barn at Broadslab, 4676 NC Highway 50 South. The event is free and open to the public.
