Body Of Missing Woman Recovered After SUV Submerges In Swamp

SAMPSON COUNTY – A woman reported missing on Tuesday was found dead Wednesday after her SUV crashed into a swamp in rural Sampson County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol the single vehicle accident was discovered around 10:30 a.m. on Old Warsaw Road near Pope Road, about four miles northeast of Clinton.

The investigation determined that a 2012 Kia Sorento was traveling north on Old Warsaw Road when it crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the roadway and entered Beaverdam Swamp, where the vehicle became submerged.

The driver, identified as Brenda Lamb Register, 68, of Turkey, was found unresponsive in the water near the crash site. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and no passengers were inside at the time of the wreck.

Authorities said Register had been reported missing Tuesday, and a missing person report had been filed with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office prior to the discovery of the crash.

No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.

The Highway Patrol said the collision remains under investigation.
