Statewide DWI Enforcement Campaign Begins Ahead Of Labor Day
RALEIGH, N.C. – Drivers across North Carolina can expect increased impaired-driving enforcement beginning Monday as the state launches its annual Labor Day “Booze It & Lose It” campaign.
The statewide enforcement period will run from Aug. 31 through Sept. 13, covering the Labor Day holiday and one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program announced the campaign during an event in Fayetteville.
Law enforcement agencies across the state will increase efforts to identify and remove impaired drivers from the road while traffic safety officials step up public awareness about the dangers of driving after consuming alcohol or other impairing substances.
In 2025, 1,528 people were killed in crashes on North Carolina roads. Of those deaths, 378 occurred in alcohol-related crashes, according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
“We are urging everyone to plan ahead and choose a sober ride home from any celebration involving alcohol or other impairing substances,” NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell said.
“Our partners in law enforcement will be out in force to keep roads safe and stop those who put others at risk. Safety remains our number one priority.”
Officials are encouraging anyone who plans to drink to make arrangements before leaving home. Options include choosing a designated driver, using a taxi or rideshare service, taking public transportation, or staying overnight rather than getting behind the wheel.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program is also reminding motorists to wear seat belts and obey posted speed limits during the holiday travel period.
The “Booze It & Lose It” campaign has been used in North Carolina for years to combine increased law enforcement with public education aimed at reducing impaired-driving crashes and fatalities.
The Labor Day enforcement campaign concludes Sept. 13.
